The Manx-born Island of Culture youth ambassador has been appointed the Royal Academy of Music’s James Watson Associate Professor of Trumpet, only weeks after completing his Bachelor’s degree at the Academy with first class honours and being awarded the Queen’s Commendation Award for Outstanding Studentship.

Lloyd Mayor Dance workshop and Public Performance (Aug30-Aug30)

Island of Culture Youth Ambassador, Dancer with the Martha Graham Dance Company, recipient of the Clive Barnes Foundation Award for Dance, and previous title holder of Young Dancer of Mann, LLOYD MAYOR returns to the Island for a one-off workshop and performance! We are so excited and pleased to welcome back Lloyd as part of our Island of Culture Celebrations on 30th August 2014. 10am-12noon – A small dance workshop run by Lloyd Mayor for dancers aged 10 and over 2pm-4pm – Performance and presentation on career path so far The dance workshop is limited to a maximum of 20 people and will be charged at £10.00 per person taking place in the Ballakermeen Dance Studio which was opened by Lloyd Mayor in recognition of his achievements in Dance. Spaces allocated on a first come, first served basis via email emma.quirk@gov.im/ Following on from the workshop, Lloyd will perform a short piece and speak about his career. This will take place in the Studio Theatre at Ballakermeen High School and will be free of charge. All aspiring dancers, passionate parents, teachers and community leaders are encouraged to attend.

Isle of Man Food and Drink Festival (Sep20-Mar19)

We all know how important food is to all aspects of culture, discussion and the arts so here is a festival to celebrate all that is good and great about food, food producers and drinks in the Isle of Man! A spectacular event for all the family, showcasing the talents of the Isle of Man as part of the Island of Culture celebrations. Expect a fairy ballet, a new and eerily dramatic take on Manannan, trumpets, strings, jazz and jigs, choirs, excerpts from Les Miserables with Manxman and West End lead Stephen Palfreman, some surprise messages of support, pyrotechnics and much more. With a cast of around 200, this is a show that’s not just music, not just dance and not just song…it’s a spectacular in every sense!

The Manx Youth Band and Manx Concert Brass are especially pleased to welcome Manx born Soprano Helen Power as their guest soloist for this year's Manx Last Night Of The Proms. Helen grew up on the island, where she played in the Manx Youth Band and Manx Concert Brass, and attended The Christine Wild Theatre School, before moving to London to pursue a performing career. Since training in musical theatre at Mountview Academy, Helen has performed on the West End stage, and several major tours have seen her perform in theatres all over the UK, Europe and beyond to outstanding reviews. As soprano soloist for the highly acclaimed Incognito Artists and classical crossover group Bravo Amici, Helen has also performed in some prestigious concert venues all over the world. The bands are pleased to have the opportunity to welcome home a Manx artist for this special Island Of Culture event.

The winning works are now featured on the ARC website in the "Finalists in the Figurative Category" section and will be published in the 2013/2014 ARC Salon catalogue.

Media launch for Island of Culture 2014

Island of Culture 2014 was launched today (March 22), signalling the build-up to the largest cultural celebration in the Isle of Man's history. Spread over 12 months, Island of Culture will celebrate the varied artistic and cultural life we enjoy, with the aim of inspiring creativity across all forms of culture, especially among young people. The year will be a mix of events staged specifically with Island of Culture in mind and a range of established events which are already regular fixtures in the Manx calendar. Event organisers are invited to apply for financial support towarrds their 2014 event - the relevant forms can be found byclicking on the 'Apply for Funding' button on the Island of Culture homepage.
